84% poor in Algeria: the figure that doesn't stand up

Y. Bensalem — Alger, Algérie — 2026-10-18

The liar's number. “Four out of five Algerians live below the poverty line,” he asserts. The World Bank measures roughly 1 to 2%. The gap is no approximation: it's a factor of forty. Either he can't read a table, or he's lying. Either way, he has no business in a debate — you correct his paper, and move on.

First incompetence: the rigged wage. He claims Algeria's “median” wage is $7.26/day. The minimum wage (SMIG) is already 20,000 DA per month. Presenting barely 29,000 DA as “median” is dragging the line downward to manufacture misery. A liar doesn't pick his numbers at random: he picks the ones that suit him.

Second incompetence: the mixed-up dollars. The World Bank's $3.65/day threshold is in PPP dollars — purchasing power parity. He compares it to a nominal market wage. That's comparing apples and kilometres. You don't debate someone who confuses units: you hand back his paper, zero points.

Third incompetence: the tautology sold as a discovery. “Half earn less than the median” — congratulations, that's the definition of the word “median”. In any country in the world, 50% are below the median, by construction. Presenting that as a revelation about poverty is degree-zero analysis. He took a dictionary definition and dressed it up as damning statistics.

And now, the colonial gall. He dares to compare the 1941 wage — when the Algerian was colonized, his land stolen, with no school and no care — to today's wage. But let's look at HIS country, while we're at it. In Morocco, the public hospital is dilapidated: no pay, no care; school and university charge fees. In Algeria, school is free, university is free, the hospital is free. And the subsidy on oil, milk, sugar, bread? It's the redistribution of oil revenues — proof that a state takes account of its citizens' hardship instead of billing them for care.

And the ultimate proof — the one that stops him breathing. Morocco has its GenZ212: its youth taking to the streets to demand free schools, free hospitals, free care. Algeria has no GenZ212. Not because its youth is submissive — because what Moroccan youth demands by shouting, the Algerian already has, without taking to the streets. While your youth demonstrates for a free hospital, ours gets treated there for free. You don't demonstrate for what you possess — and you don't lecture others on poverty when you make your sick and your students pay.
