State Islamophobia: from CNews and BFM to the Trappes bullet

N. Rochat — Genève, Suisse — 2026-10-25

Trappes, and nothing else

On 23 October, in Trappes then in La Verrière, gunfire targeted people because they were — or were presumed to be — Muslim. A child was seriously wounded. We will speak here only of that: a hate crime against Muslims, Arabs and Black people, committed in a country where hatred against them has become an industry.

The factory: BFM, CNews, Bolloré

Before the bullet, there is the sentence. And the sentence is repeated endlessly on air. On CNews, the channel of the Bolloré group, every news item turns into an indictment of Islam and the banlieues: they endlessly rehash the “ensauvagement”, the “great replacement”, the “separatism”. On BFM, working-class neighbourhoods are covered like war zones, and the microphone is handed to polemicists who build their careers on the backs of immigrants. One day, someone takes the sentence literally — and fires. This is not an accident: it is a production line, from the studio to the bullet.

The law, the armed wing

France did not merely stand by: it legislated. The 2021 law “reinforcing respect for the principles of the Republic”, known as the “separatism” law, targeted only one community: Muslims. Mosque closures, association dissolutions, imam oversight — an arsenal tailor-made. And “laïcité” has become a two-speed weapon: the abaya is banned at school, the burkini is hunted on the beaches — while public subsidies to faith-based schools keep flowing... provided they are not Muslim.

For Muslim schools, on the other hand, are attacked. The textbook case is the Averroès high school in Lille, the first private Muslim school under contract with the state. The Hauts-de-France region, led by Xavier Bertrand, cut its subsidies. The courts ruled: the school must receive its subsidies again. And what did Mr. Bertrand answer? “If I had to do it again, I would do everything exactly the same way.” An elected official of the Republic who openly admits, before the judges, to not respecting the law. This is not laïcité: it is selection — assumed, claimed, and signed.

Impunity, the blood that does not count

And when it kills, who pays? No one. We published the complete file — “[Deaths in police custody: the names, the origins, the sentences](https://algeria-vanguard.pages.dev/article/morts-en-garde-a-vue-les-noms-les-origines-les-peines)” — thirty cases, twenty sources. Of these thirty deaths, twenty-one of whom were not white — Maghrebis, Black people from sub-Saharan Africa, Asians, Turks — almost no firm conviction: one suspended sentence, acquittals, dismissals, files that vanish, sealed evidence that evaporates. The IGPN — that “police of the police” — investigates, and drops the case, almost without exception. This is not a malfunction: it is the function. A state that punishes the theft of a wallet so quickly and the death of a man so little has chosen its side. And that side is not the side of the victims.

The conclusion

France does not have a problem with Islamophobia. It has made Islamophobia — and anti-Arab hatred, and anti-Black hatred — a method of government, watered by its channels, protected by its laws, absolved by its justice. A Republic that arms hatred against a part of its own children protects no one — it digs the grave of its own claim to universality. You do not save the Republic by designating its scapegoats. You bury it.

⚠️ WARNING. May those who govern read us to the end. Communities that are targeted, killed without anyone ever paying, humiliated endlessly on air, may soon take up arms in turn — and act. Justice, speech, equality have been closed off to them: soon only force will remain. Civil war is what hangs over France. This is not a call — it is a warning. And history, which has already seen this film, knows who goes down into the pit first.
