The fire razed. They built.
Lamia Merabet — Alger, Algérie — 2026-10-15
Five Algerian high-school students won a gold medal at the FIRST Global Challenge 2026, in Incheon, South Korea. “World champion”: no. And the exaggeration does not make them greater — it exposes them. Here is what they did, and what was written in their place.
1. The fact, first — and it is already immense
From 7 to 10 October 2026, in Incheon (South Korea), the world's largest robotics competition for high-school students brought together national teams from nearly 190 countries. One country, one team: three to five students, a coach, a mentor.
There were five of them. Behind them, a team of twelve pupils selected from more than a hundred candidates, after three selection stages and two qualifying competitions, divided into five poles: mechanics, programming, community and documentation, outreach and strategy, driving and cohesion.
The trip was made with the support of Samsung Electronics Algeria and the Altis Training Center, under the patronage of the Ministry of the Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises: a corporate and training partnership, not a dedicated public programme.
Their names are not public: we will not invent them.
2. Fate put into their hands the scourge that burns their country
The competition rules are clear, and we verified them at the official source: the theme of the 2026 edition is imposed on all teams. It is called “Igniting Innovation”, and it asks for a robot to be built from a standard kit of parts for an environment inspired by the prevention, mitigation and recovery of forest fires.
So no: it was not the Algerian fire that inspired these pupils. The subject was given to them — and it is exactly the scourge that strikes their country every summer. They did not choose the theme. They chose to make something of it.
3. What they won — and what was written in their place
The official closing communiqué, published on 10 October 2026, gives the results:
| Distinction | Gold |
|---|---|
| Winning alliance (tournament final) | Venezuela · El Salvador · Uzbekistan · Moldova |
| Albert Einstein Award (international excellence) | Mexico |
| FIRST Global Grand Challenge Award (best total score) | Uzbekistan |
| FG Innovator Award (new technologies experience) | Cayman Islands |
Algeria appears in none of these categories. It won a gold medal — whose category is not established by the official results published. That is what we write, and nothing more.
The headline that circulated — “ALGERIA WORLD CHAMPION: GOLD IN ROBOTICS | 5 high-school students against 190 countries” — was passed to us without any identified URL or author. We therefore cannot attach it by name to a media outlet.
On the other hand, we opened those that covered the news: none writes “world champion”: TSA headlines “the Algerian team takes a gold medal”; Algerie360 writes “Algeria in gold in Korea”; Alison News headlines “Algeria Wins FIRST Global Gold”; Visa-Algérie, before the event, spoke of a “world competition”. The overstatement does not come from them. It comes from the content that circulated.
Why this matters. The first reader who checks finds Moldova, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Mexico — and does not ask who exaggerated: he looks at our five high-school students. They won a gold medal. It was not they who wrote “world champion”. False praise is not praise: it is a debt left to the child.
4. Why it is difficult — explained, without jargon
A robot is not an object: it is a line of reasoning that holds up.
Mechanics first. The pupils receive the same kit as the other 190 nations: the resource gap is neutralised. Every part must hold, vibrate as little as possible, be repaired in three minutes between two rounds.
Then the code. A movement is translated into instructions: sense, compute, correct — a few degrees of error, and the robot misses its target.
Strategy above all. The rounds are played in randomly drawn alliances of three nations. An Algerian robot finds itself paired with teams that do not speak its language. It has to negotiate in English, live, understand the other's strengths and build a common tactic — then set off again with other partners in the next round.
And driving, under pressure, in front of thousands of people. Five poles, one single team: they welded together mechanics, code and nerve — and they tore a gold medal from nearly 190 nations.
5. The fire, for its part, is not told in trophies
It must be said plainly.
In August 2026, the fires in north-eastern Algeria killed at least twelve people and left fifty-four hospitalised injured, six of them in a serious condition, according to the toll given by the Minister of the Interior, in the regions of Béjaïa, Jijel and Tizi-Ouzou. The President of the Republic decreed three days of national mourning, with the cancellation of festivities and competitions. The same day, 193 outbreaks were recorded in twenty-four hours and 46 were still burning. In July, nearly 2,000 fires and at least six deaths had been counted.
Those dead have families. So we will not write that the fire “awakened” anything. The fire gave nothing. It took. What those five did, they did by the will of Allah, and by their work — not because a misfortune happened.
The merit belongs to them. To them alone.
6. What the State did — acts, dates, figures
No compliment without a fact.
Against the fires. The General Directorate of Forests deployed, for the campaign from 1 May to 30 November 2026: 35 operational drones (80 more being acquired), 510 lookout posts, 40 mobile columns in 40 wilayas, 544 first-intervention brigades, 52,350 km of tracks opened or maintained, 31,125 hectares of firebreaks, more than 3,000 water points and a fleet of some twenty aircraft (helicopters and water-bomber planes), including Air Tractors. 2,500 environmental associations are involved in prevention.
For the victims. Nearly 1,200 billion centimes of compensation actually paid to the fire victims, the presidency indicated on 4 October 2026 — and a revaluation of the salaries of Civil Protection officers.
For the youth. The October 2026 session of vocational training concerns more than 400,000 trainees, with 23 new specialities — including new technologies and renewable energies — and the creation of 25 technical laboratories “Make It Lab” equipped for prototyping, printing and testing.
For Algerians abroad. A Secretariat of State for the national community abroad has been created; a High Council of the national scientific community abroad held its constitutive meeting; the seats reserved for the diaspora in the People's National Assembly have gone from eight to twelve; State aid supports young independent candidates abroad; and a first edition of an honorary programme brought together, from 3 to 9 July 2026, outstanding students from the diaspora.
⚠️ And the limits, stated frankly. These schemes are documented as announced and undertaken; we have found no independent evaluation of their results. The human toll of the fires was contested in its reporting by at least one publication. And above all: the medal of these five high-school students does not stem from a dedicated public programme — but first from their work, then from a corporate partnership, under the patronage of a ministry. We will not turn their achievement into the result of a policy.
7. Conclusion
One piece of content said: “world champion”. The official results say: four other nations, a gold medal with no established category — and five high-school students who exaggerated nothing.
The fire razed. They built. That is Algerian resilience: never letting misfortune write the last line.

⚠️ Published reservations.
(1) The category of the Algerian gold medal is not established. The official communiqué announces “more than twenty medals and distinctions”; Algeria appears in none of the categories detailed there. We therefore write “gold medal — category not established”, and we never claim the overall ranking.
(2) The headline “world champion” could not be attached to an author. It was passed to us without a URL or the name of a media outlet. We therefore attribute it to no one — and we refuse to write “the Algerian press” as a bloc.
(3) The following media covered the subject and are cited in no demonstration of this article; no words are lent to them: L'Expression (“Le génie algérien illumine Séoul”), Just Info Dz, DzNews, El Ikhbaria, L'Espoir Libre, Fil d'Algérie, Algérie48, DZWatch.
(4) The names of the five high-school students are not public. We do not invent them.
(5) Date discrepancy: the organiser indicates 7–10 October; two media indicate 7–12 October, the difference corresponding to the visit to the Korean fire research institute, on the 12th.
(6) Number of countries: the organiser writes “more than 190 national teams” in March 2026 and “nearly 190 countries” at the closing. We give both formulations.
(7) The human toll was contested in its reporting by at least one publication; we cite the toll attributed to the Minister of the Interior, dated. The number of hectares burned in 2026 is not established: it is therefore not published here.
(8) The State measures are documented as announced and undertaken. We have found no independent evaluation of their results — and we write so in the article.
(9) The link between the State and the medal is not demonstrated. The documented support is that of Samsung Electronics Algeria and Altis Training Center, under the patronage of a ministry. We do not present this medal as the result of a public programme.
(10) No nominative tribute in the body of the article — in accordance with the instruction: we document the acts, the reader judges.
